15 Ways to Use Support Workers During Social Distancing of COVID-19

Empowrd • March 23, 2020

For some participants, personal care & help, lifting and other support means you can not avoid having direct contact with support workers. However, many NDIS participants don’t need that physical support. If you are one of those people, you can still receive their support without touching or getting too close.

The main thing is to make sure you are both WASHING YOUR HANDS, well and consistently.

Here are some ideas, depending on your support needs (please keep distance between one another in mind during these activities):

  1. Go for a walk together, keeping metres apart.
  2. Sit outside, and learn to play an instrument together.
  3. Make and fly a kite at the local park.
  4. Leave your laundry at your front door, and ask your support worker to pick it up — to wash and dry then return (check if this is okay with them first).
  5. Have them help set up a Skype or Zoom account — where you can chat, read or teach both from the comforts of your own home.
  6. Help with an outside gym routine.
  7. Ask them to do your shopping or errands without you.
  8. Build a garden together and grow some herbs, vegetables or flowers.
  9. Have them help you Facetime with your friends.
  10. Going for a bike ride.
  11. Play a board game via Zoom.
  12. Letterbox the neighbours and offer to walk their dogs for free or to pay
  13. Painting or artwork outside
  14. Learn to do some household chores
