Fuel Shortages and NDIS Support: What Participants Need to Know

Fuel shortages and rising fuel costs are creating challenges for many people across Australia, especially in regional and remote communities where travel is often essential, and transport options may be limited. Recent reporting has highlighted localised shortages, supply pressure in regional areas and the broader impact of higher fuel costs on everyday life.
For many NDIS participants, transport is not a luxury. It is an important part of everyday life and community participation. Support workers may assist participants to get to medical appointments, therapy sessions, school, work, social activities, grocery shopping and pharmacy visits. When fuel becomes more expensive or harder to access, the effects can quickly flow through to the people who rely on these supports.
At Empowrd, we understand how important continuity of support is. We have policies and procedures in place to help manage emergencies and disruptions wherever possible, with a focus on keeping participants safe, supported and connected.
Fuel shortages, transport disruptions, communication outages, fire, flood and extreme weather can all affect access to support. Planning ahead can help reduce stress and make it easier to respond to unexpected disruptions.
At Empowrd, we always offer participants the option to create a personalised emergency and disaster management plan. These plans can cover a range of emergencies and disruptions, including fire, flood, communication issues and other situations that may affect access to supports.
Planning ahead is not about causing worry. It is about making sure the right supports and strategies are in place so that, if something unexpected happens, participants are not facing it alone.
If you are concerned about how fuel shortages or another emergency may affect your supports, Empowrd encourages you to reach out to your Support Coordinator.
Empowrd offers local Support Coordination across Eyre Peninsula. We are here to help you plan ahead and stay connected to the services and supports that matter most.
